This is a neat old Martin Handcraft Committee model alto sax, serial number 117400. Often called a Martin Skyline because of the engraving on the bell, these are some of the first great horns Martin produced in their long run of success. This alto has a newer pad job on it and just needs a fresh regulation to be in tip-top playing shape.

This alto was relacquered a very long time ago and done extremely well. The “newer” lacquer has an aged patina that looks great, and the engraving on the bell is still crisp and defined. The sax shows a smattering of tiny dings and dimples in the bottom bow but no serious past trauma, and I see no resolders or other past repair. The original neck, with matching serial number, has never been pulled down.

Pads are all in like-new condition matched with brown plastic resonators. The action feels pretty solid under your fingers, but there are a couple little leaks here and there. You can blow through them, but ideally the sax could stand a fresh set up.

This Martin plays with an open, free response, and a bit on the warmer side without being too dark and certainly not stuffy or inhibiting. Very strong response, and as you push it, it opens up and provides a nice edge. Fun old horn to play, and hearkens back to the classic 30s era jazz standards.
