Superb, An Oldie But 'Goodie'

Here we have a unique piece of history, a metal Goldbeck 'Superb' alto mouthpiece in nickel plate with a #3 facing. Goldbeck is known for being the earliest metal mouthpiece maker during the 1920s in the USA. This mouthpiece is somewhat a rare find, so collectors should take note.

Physical condition is important with pieces as old as this. Fortunately, it's in great shape with little plateware across the body, the beak has no teeth marks just the remnants of a tooth cushion, there are some light scrapes on the body from the ligature, but the stampings are still crisp and clear. The side rails, rail-tip, and table look to be in original condition.

This mouthpiece plays well with a dark warm tone, the baffle is deep, the side-walls are round, and the chamber is huge. This piece plays with a dark, spread sonic character, using a stiff reed is suggested as the tip opening is only .049-inch/1.24mm.
