Rare Horn that Plays!
Here we have a C.G. Conn F-Mezzo soprano sax in gold lacquer, serial number 216072. This horn came into our shop on old pads, and is currently in our repair shop in line for a complete overhaul/repad.

The F mezzo-soprano was manufactured only for a short run by Conn in the late 1920s and early 1930s, during the 'Chu Berry' series of New Wonder II saxes, they are quite rare. These are the ones with the fingernail-file G#, rolled tone holes, chromatic key-work from low Bb up to palm-F, front-F mechanism included, trill G# and Eb 'back-door' options. The bell-keys are positioned on the left side, and all the key-guards are cage style. Although they are called a mezzo-soprano, they look similar to a small alto sax, their bow and bell are closer to an alto's size.

The original silver plating has been removed and replaced with a honey gold lacquer; this looks to have been a factory relacquer job, the engravings and serial number haven't faded at all. Fortunately, this horn is in great physical condition since its last overhaul, no dents, all the springs are in great condition. Although it plays well as-is, it would benefit from an overhaul, so we are including a full refresh with new pads, resonators, corks, felts.

This F-Mezzo is playing surprisingly well on its current old pads, giving a full, up-front, spread-wide sonic character with a free-blowing feel and quick response. The spring tension is a bit tight for my taste, but springs will be optimized during our job.

This is an amazing piece. We will ship this F-mezzo in its original Conn F-Mezzo black, box-style carrying-case with purple plush interior, original neck included.
