Vintage Selmer Paris Super Balanced Action Silver Plated Tenor, Serial #46258
Selmer Paris SBA Silver 1951 - As Is Condition
This is a vintage Selmer Paris Super Balanced Action tenor saxophone in silver plate, serial number 46258. Manufactured in 1951 in Paris France with no engraving and a high F# key. This one in particular was professionally owned and actively played throughout its life. At this time it has been quite awhile since the sax has seen any serious service. As it sits now it will need a thorough mechanical overhaul and re-spring before it is ready for any serious amount of use. We are selling the saxophone at a much lower cost in “as is” condition so the next owner has room to have it worked on by the tech of their choice.
The photos of this sax tell its story of a fantastic pro horn that has seen plenty of love and use over the years. The body is in solid condition overall but like most great players there is a history of past body and solder repair. Some of the guard feet have been re-soldered in the past and a previous owner also had all of the key pearl touches replaced. The bell flare also is currently bent down. At some point a past owner had a support plate added under the thumb rest. This is a fairly standard modification to prevent the brass from wearing down under the player right thumb.
In the old Selmer factory books this sax was recorded as being manufactured in silver plate with high F# and no engraving. It has seen plenty of use over the years but we do believe the silver finish to be original.
This sax is with the original SBA neck. It does not look like the neck has ever been pulled down which is good. For some reason a previous tech who worked on this sax put a series of deep scratches on the end of the neck where the cork covers. Unfortunately these marks do go all the way through the silver plating in a few spots. The next owner of this sax will want to have this addressed by their tech as well as have the outer ring replaced. (Please see photos of neck with out the cork at the end of the photo spread)
These days a good Super Balanced Action is a hot commodity and much harder to come across than they were 10 years ago. This one currently needs some TLC but all padded up right these SBA tenors are mind blowing players, generally selling for prices exceeding well over $10,000. We are selling this one at a lower price in its current condition. Please take a look at the 50+ photos in the gallery and contact us if you have any questions.
