New Lower Price on the NEW BUFFET SENZO Alto Sax!!

GREAT NEWS on the Buffet SENZO front! Price Reduction……..new Buffet SENZO now $5495.

We had a great discussion with Buffet at NAMM this year! They are totally committed to making the best saxophone ever! Although the SENZO is expensive to manufacture, Buffet really wants to make the barrier to entry for players as low as possible.

Buffet is one of the few companies where the top brass are still actually musicians. They get it!!! I’ve never had another company approach me about working together to find creative ways to reduce the end price for the player!

Here’s a great clip of Jeff Collins demonstrating the new Buffet SENZO on Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition – The Old Castle.

New Upcoming Events @ Saxquest this Summer!

We’ve been busy putting together a few events at the Saxquest shop this spring & summer. We’re still hashing out the details on a few, but here’s a couple you can start marking your calendars for:

On Saturday, April 4, we’re going to have Jamey Aebersold for a clinic from 2-4pm. We’ve been wanting to host Jamey for quite some time, and we are very excited to finally put this together! His Play-A-Long series and summer jazz workshops are a long-time staple in many an advancing jazz saxophonist’s upbringing.

A few weeks after that, on Saturday April 25, we’re going to have a “Selmer Clarinet Day” at the Saxquest shop from 2-4pm. Conn-Selmer will be on hand with the latest and greatest Selmer Paris model clarinets for you to play test in our store. We may also put together a mini-concert or clinic for this event as well.

More events will continue to be added, please put these down on your calendar and check back for more!

Come visit the Saxquest shop!

We are (finally) through the trade show season for us. After visiting JEN, NAMM, Midwest, ILMEA, MMEA, and TMEA, we are now realizing the Saxquest shop is a little too quiet! Come visit us in St Louis, and bring your mouthpiece to make some noise! You can try out the newest P Mauriat Master 97 saxes, or a Yamaha Custom Z in “vintage bronze” finish, or a great old Mark VI. We also have a huge selection of new and vintage mouthpieces for you to play test as well. You can see the impressive Saxquest museum on our second floor, or see a sax or clarinet all disassembled in our repair shop. Regular hours 10am – 6pm during the week, and 10am – 2pm on Saturdays. Please come by with a few hours to spare and try out some equipment!

Looking ahead to 2015, we are lining up some very nice events starting this spring. As in the last couple years, we’ll try to bring an exciting lineup of master classes, intimate concerts, and Q & A’s with some of today’s great players and educators. Please continue to check our events page or the news section here for when these events get announced, or call us to sign up for our email notification list when these events get put together. We’ll see you at the ‘quest!

Saxquest on the road @ MMEA & ILMEA

We split up this year! If you are attending either MMEA in Missouri or ILMEA in Illinois this week, we will see you there! Each booth will have a good 25 saxes or so as well as 10+ clarinets. We’ll have the latest reeds and mouthpieces from D’Addario & Vandoren as well. Come by the booth, play a sax or mouthpiece, and say hi.

If you are stuck in St Louis, the shop will be open normal hours, but the stock will be somewhat… lessened. If you are looking for a particular horn, best to call ahead to make sure it is here before driving in. Everyone will be back in the shop, returned to normal come Monday (at least until TMEA in a couple weeks!).

Convention season is almost here!

We had another great clinic this past weekend with Jeff Coffin & the Mu’tet. A big thanks to all those that came out for it, and all of the clinics and performances and master classes we had this year. We had a lot of fun bringing these artists in and hope to continue more next year!

With the holidays upon us, conventions and trade shows are just around the corner. If you’ve been a long time customer but have never made the trek to our shop in St Louis, hopefully we can meet you at one of these over the next couple months. This season, we’ll be visiting the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, JEN in San Diego, TMEA down in Texas, and of course locally we’ll be at MMEA here in Missouri and ILMEA over in Illinois. Though we won’t have a booth there, Saxquest president Mark Overton will also be loitering around the NAMM show in Anaheim. Please visit our booths, try a sax out (or three) and let us put faces to those of you we’ve talked to over the phone. See you soon!

SAXQUEST Clinic Series Presents JEFF COFFIN & the MU’TET Saturday 11/22

Jeff Coffin Mu'tet at Saxquest

We are thrilled to welcome back to the shop Jeff Coffin & the Mu’tet, this Saturday November 22 at Saxquest from 2pm – 4pm. This will be a special acoustic performance/clinic of the Mu’tet, unlike what we’ve seen when they’ve visited us before, and definitely worth checking out! As always it will be free and open to the public.

The Mu’tet takes its name from the word mutation, giving way to Coffin’s belief that music is constantly changing and mutating. Jeff is a 3X Grammy award winner, and is a member of the Dave Matthews Band and was a long-time member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones.

Other members of the group include legendary and iconic players:

Felix Pastorius, son of bass great Jaco Pastorius, roots the Mu’tet on electric bass. He has been playing with the group since 2002. In 2012 he joined the legendary jazz quartet Yellowjackets. Felix is a gifted composer and a monster bassist with great chops and sensitivity.

On drums is the legendary Roy “Futureman” Wooten. Wooten is a five-time Grammy Award-winning performer with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. A percussionist of international acclaim, more recently, Wooten has developed a new electronic instrument called the RoyEl, which resembles a piano but plays notes not found in the traditional western music scales. This instrument is based on the periodic table of elements and the golden ratio.

Bill Fanning rounds out the horns on trumpet. Bill has performed with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, the Mu’tet, Glenn Frye (of the Eagles), George Garzone, Jon Faddis, Maria Schneider and George Russell. A brilliant improvisor and musician, Bill is stretching the boundaries of the trumpet.

Chris Walters is a brilliant piano player known for his fresh and inventive compositions and improvisations. One of Nashville’s most in-demand sidemen across multiple genres, and an active front-man, Walters has a completely unique and compelling sound.

Its such a tremendous thrill for us to bring such a fantastic event to you! The Mu’tet will playing at Jazz at the Bistro this week as well, from the 19th through the 22nd, so catch them there and catch a special acoustic set here!

SAXQUEST Free Concert Artist Series – TIA FULLER – Thursday 11/13

Tia Fuller performs at SaxquestWe’re incredibly excited to invite you out to the Saxquest shop this Thursday evening (7:30-9PM) for a very special FREE performance/clinic by Tia Fuller. Fuller has made a name for herself over the past 10 years as being one of the hardest hitting saxophonists on the New York scene and has clearly risen to the top of her generation of musicians. As a Mack Avenue recording Artist, Fuller is grounded in a jazz mode of expression that embraces both the classic and the contemporary sounds surrounding her. It’s no mistake that artists from Esperanza Spalding to Beyoncé include her instrumental voice and vision in their work. Fusing traditions, styles, and unafraid of genre boundaries, Fuller’s music transgresses the musical frontiers of today!

While having performed in a multitude of musical idioms, it’s the jazz quartet where Tia has focused her recordings as a leader. It’s this setting where she really shines, not only in her ability to play with a spell bounding modern lyricism, but also her ability to interact with the quartet, where all members of the ensemble are on an equal footing. It’s also this “jazz quartet” setting that you’ll hear Ms. Fuller in performance at Saxquest. She’ll be sharing the stage with St. Louis’s Phil Dunlap, Nathan Pence and Montez Coleman.

Thanks to everyone who continues to come out to our events and helps support our shop. If you haven’t been out for a while, I hope to see you this Thursday. Remember, it’s the enthusiasm that you show towards these events that motivates us to continue hosting more events in the future.
Also mark your calendar:
Saturday Nov 22 – 2PM-4PM – JEFF COFFIN & the Mu’tet (unplugged)
