Superb condition original lacquer Couf Superba I series alto sax, serial number 82692. This horn was made by Keilwerth for Herbert Couf when he was at Armstrong, and has all of the features of a professional Keilwerth sax, including rolled tone holes. It will get a fresh pro overhaul from our shop before it goes out, so you can have peace of mind that it will be playing great for years to come.
Physically this alto is in solid shape all around. The original lacquer is greater than 95% with only mild wear from nominal use over the years. There's some minor dent work in 2 spots. One is on the bottom bow around the bottom post of the low C/Eb keys, under there and the neighboring keyguard feet. This was repaired in the past but not done especially well. We'll clean it up to look better, but will always be a little lumpy going forward. The other past repair is on the neck. It has never been pulled down, but one foot of the 8ve key saddle was slightly pushed in. This has been corrected and is really hard to spot.
A previous owner had new pads put in a few years ago, but they are the wrong size pads for this sax and do not meet our exacting standards. To make it right, we're going to start fresh. We'll complete a full overhaul, with all new pads, corks, material, and regulation. All is included in the price.
This alto plays with a very free, open response, without sacrificing warmth or color of tone. It takes your air well with just a bit of positive resistance to give you something to push against. Definitely in the Couf/Keilwerth school of sound, so if that is what you are looking for, this alto will please. Ships in its original hard case, which is in tremendous shape.
