This is a 1959 vintage Martin Magna series alto sax in excellent original lacquer, serial number 206422. This is a fine professional level horn for those players who love the American classics. It was repadded recently with premium pads and resonators and is a nice player with a fat, broad sound.
The Magna was Martin's last truly pro model horn, and is similar to the Martin Committee III that came before it. This example looks great, with 95% original lacquer intact. There's no major lacquer wear spots, but does show mild scratching on the bow, backside of the tube, and bell, from normal use. There are no major dents, no resolders, and the original neck (with matching serial number) has never been pulled down. This sax was repadded in the last couple years with firm leather pads and custom machined brass flat metal resonators. The horn is getting that “broken in” feel and there's some minor clicky-clacks in the action, but the pads are sealing great down to low Bb, so we are selling it as-is on the current set up. It will do everything you need it to do.
I found this Martin to play with a very full, warm sound. Not overly dark, but definitely warm and expressive. Takes your air well without much resistance and responds quickly. The keywork is slightly more open feeling, especially if you are coming from a Selmer or modern Taiwanese horn, but feels comfortable after just a couple minutes on it. Great sax for a great price! Ships with original metal endcap and its original case, which is just about the mint-est vintage Martin case I've ever seen.
