Store Information
This is a first series King Super 20 tenor sax in original lacquer, serial number 278721. This sax dates to 1946, the very first series of this popular model. It features pearl side keys, triple neckstrap ring, sunburst engraving on all of the lower body key cups, and sterling silver neck with double socket receiver and underslung octave key. This is the real deal, a great sax for serious pro players.
This tenor came to us recently repadded by another shop, but honestly the work is not very good. My tech says it really needs to be disassembled and properly overhauled, using better quality pads. It also needs proper key fitting, and some dent work here and there, most notably in the bottom bow, as seen in the photos. The neck is also loose and will need to be tightened. We are selling this sax “as is” needing that work, so you'll be able to take it to your local/favorite tech to have it overhauled.
The original lacquer on this tenor is in decent overall condition, with wear mostly on the bell and backside of the body tube, all from normal playing/wear-and-tear. There are no resolders that I can spot, but the sax does have a fair amount of dent work needed in the bottom bow area. The neck appears to be original, but it lacks a serial number stamp, so it could be a factory replacement (or the neck was not stamped for some reason).
This tenor should dazzle once it is properly restored. I've played a lot of these early Super 20's, and I'm always blown away by how big of a sound you get out of them. Very fast response and tons of projection/power. A real power horn, not for the faint of heart! Ships in a black BAM Classic series case.
