Vintage 1940's Buffet Crampon Paris SA 18-20 Alto Saxophone, Serial #708 – Project Horn
Vintage Buffet SA 18-20 Alto
This is a vintage Buffet Crampon SA 18-20 alto saxophone, serial number 708. These saxophone feature standard key work, low Bb to high front F. This one also has a back door Eb key. (previous owner has chose to keep corked shut) All of the key work is original and intact with this sax, including the original neck. The SA 18-20 is an earlier Buffet model that was briefly made before the Dynaction series.
The pictures of this sax tell its story very well. It has seen plenty of use in the past and has some history of past body and solder repair, some smaller dings still remain. Right now it is going to need a mechanical restoration before it is ready for any serious playing. The body tube, bow, bow cap and bell are all in nice condition and do not show any serious past abuse. At this point the majority of the finish is gone and the horn is now in raw brass. The engraving does still look pretty crisp.
The SA 18-20 is honestly a fairly rare item and we do not see a lot of them. While this one is not the prettiest it is in very solid condition and will make a great horn once it is restored. If you have a good tech in mind this alto can become a fantastic player. At this time the alto does need a mechanical overhaul with a little bit of cosmetic work (dings and solder) as well as a new set of springs.
