This Chicago-born jazz alto saxophonist is known for his distinctive sound and his prolific performing and recording career which has spanned six decades. His improvisational style is described as “melodic” and “resourceful”. He is often noted as one of the few jazz saxophonists of the late 1940s and 1950s who did not seem imitative of the massively influential Charlie Parker. He has more than 50 albums to his credit.
