In the one year period between March 1957 and March 1958, tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins recorded three of the most brilliant trio records in jazz history: "Way Out West," "A Night at the Village Vanguard" and "Freedom Suite."
At the height of his game in 1959, when he had been nominated as the New Star of the Tenor Saxophone by DownBeat, Rollins actually questioned his newfound fame and walked away from it. Think about it, at the supposed Zenith of his fame and popularity, he just walked away. Rollins walked deep into a self-imposed woodshed/reflection time. At the age of 29, Rollins had the foresight to question where he was headed and how was he going to evolve in the years to come.
Had it not been for a rumor circulated by a journalist of hearing a saxophone coming from the "Brooklyn Bridge," no one would have guessed what Rollins might have been up to. Everyday, he would leave his apartment on the lower East Side of Manhattan, walk out onto the Williamsburg Bridge to practice while staring out over the East River, and really rethink his approach to his art.
In Rollins own words:
I was getting very famous at the time and I felt I needed to brush up on various aspects of my craft. I felt I was getting too much, too soon, so I said, wait a minute, I'm going to do it my way. I wasn't going to let people push me out there, so I could fall down. I wanted to get myself together, on my own. I used to practice on the Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge because I was living on the Lower East Side at the time.
Think about it when was the last time someone famous really walked away from it all. This was an incredible career risk. He could have been completely forgotten about, as happens all too often in the music world, and cast off as a "has been."
When he emerged in 1962, it was with a new label, a new clarity of tone and a new quartet.
What was the name of Sonny's first album recorded in 1962 after his hiatus and who were the members of his quartet?
