In the saxophone world, I am a well-known performer and teacher. I have taught at two top music conservatories in France, and my students teach at some of the top universities in the world. In the 1950’s, I was one of the first wind instrumentalists to perform full solo recitals in concert halls around the world. The Washington Post called me “the most revered of French saxophonists.” Over 100 compositions have been written for me. I am currently retired from performing, but I travel around the world giving lectures on the saxophone and leading master classes. I am the President of the International Saxophone Committee of the World Saxophone Congress. I recently completed an updated version of an important guide to the saxophone repertoire.
Who am I?
Jean-Marie Londeix first taught at the Conservatory of Dijon, but most famously taught at the Bordeaux Conservatory. The Washington Post stated “he has made the Bordeaux Conservatory the world’s leading center of saxophone studies.” He has performed over 600 times as a concert soloist around the world, and in the 1950’s was one of the first wind instrumentalists to perform full solo recitals in some of the world’s most famous concert halls. He appears on 13 LP’s and six compact discs. Edison Denisov called him “one of the greatest musicians of our time.” Denisov composed his Sonata for Londeix. He has written more than 20 important pedagogical works for the saxophone, almost all of which have been translated into five languages. Londeix has spent many years compiling an extensive list of all of the works written for saxophone. He first published 125 Years of Music for Saxophone, then 150 Years of Music for Saxophone, Music for Saxophone Volume II, and finally, Comprehensive Guide to the Saxophone Repertoire 1844-2003. He also wrote one of the most famous pedagogical guides to extended technique on the saxophone, Hello Mr. Sax!
