Martin Williams wrote, "Several times this pianist spoke publicly of a singular moment when he first discovered the freedom that goes with being a jazz player. And several times he also spoke of the enormous discipline that it requires.
This jazz pianist recorded his first session as a leader late in 1956 while also recording as a sideman with other such great jazz leaders of the day such as Bob Brookmeyer, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, George Russell and others. A major early event in this person's career was the several months he spent with the Miles Davis sextet in 1958. And in 1959 he formed what was to become one of the most successful and innovative trios in jazz history.
In the summer of '62 he orchestrated two Riverside "larger-than-trio" projects that took place in Nola Studios.
Who was the saxophonist on the second session?
Zoot Sims
