This disciple of Lester Young left the Billy Eckstein band in 1947 to form his own quintet. In 1949 he performed a brief stint with the Woody Herman Orchestra. After this year with the Herman Orchestra and a brief time with Sonny Stitt, he spent most of the late 50's and the decade of the 60's in prison for drugs. During this time, his record label was able to keep him relevant to the music scene by continuing to put out previously unreleased music of his. It was not much more than a decade after his release from prison that he was found to have bone cancer. His last recording was of the song "Goodbye".
