This saxophonist was born in Los Angeles. His Father was a famed cinematographer, and his mother a concert violinist. From the beginning his parents supported him in his pursuit of music. He would eventually find his way to New York.
While in New York this saxophonist would become a prominent member in the first so called “Jazz School.” His schooling consisted of serious analysis of musicians such as Lester Young, Louis Armstrong, and Billy Holliday. The school emphasized lyrical lines, and the need to play horizontally instead of vertically. The students focused on producing original lines, and stayed away from playing “licks.” This saxophonist was the only member to complete the “Jazz School,” and it showed in his playing.
After completing his schooling the saxophonist recorded and toured with many of his fellow classmates. He also would go on to lead his own groups. In the 1970s he was a member of the group Supersax. He would eventually find his way back to Los Angeles in his later years. At the age of 60 the saxophonist died. He was performing in a club called Dante’s. He finished playing a solo, set his horn down and died of a heart attack.
The saxophonist still remains influencial among jazz enthusiasts and his popularity continues to grow. Both Anthony Braxton and Mark Turner have cited this saxophonist as being a substantial influence on their playing.
