There have been many talented saxophonists throughout history that have also been equally gifted in composition. One saxophonist/composer mostly known for his contributions to the jazz idiom premiered a composition of another kind about a year ago. The piece was a dramatic aria and was performed by full symphony in one of the major cities in the United States.
Writing in styles outside the jazz realm is nothing new for this composer. This saxophonist/composer attended an arts high school that is famous for producing many famous musicians, singers, actors and artists. While at this art school this person studied saxophone, classical theory and composition extensively and even worked on an opera.
This person also served two years in the United States Army. He almost stayed longer as the Army valued his skills as rifle marksmen and requested that he stay on as a firing range instructor.
Who is this person and who was the opera singer that the aria was written for?
Wayne Shorter - saxophonist Renée Flemming - opera singer
