Jazz piano virtuoso Bud Powell was a music icon and mentor for many of the young up and coming jazz musicians in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. He helped add to the foundation of many players during a time when stylistically everything was typically drawn from Charlie Parker. One of Powell’s young disciples also helped him through a period of hard ships in which Powell was suffering from mental illness. To repay his young pupil Powell closely mentored him and helped him in developing his own personnel and unique style. While this saxophonist’s style is heavily rooted in the influences of Parker and Powell, the sound he produced was often described as edgy, acidic and sometimes sharp.
Like many musicians of that period this young saxophonist had a serious addiction to heroin for a time before he kicked the habit. He would later go on to become a leader in the hard bop and modal scene as well as also becoming a strong anti-drug advocate.
What is the name of the saxophone player Bud Powell mentored and what were the two major record labels he recorded for in the 50’s and 60’s?
