A politically charged poet, playwright, actor, and general Avant Garde leader, this saxophone player may have been one of the best examples of a true renaissance man during the 1960's. He was signed to Impulse records in 1964 and would record up to 17 albums during his time there.
The contemporaries who he worked closely with included Paul and Carla Bley, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, and John Coltrane to name a few. Somewhat due to the influence of Coltrane, spiritually was always a strong influential force in the music and work of this musician. Also seen as the most politically vocal of Coltrane's followers, this man even once spoke out against the readers of Down Beat magazine whom he perceived as mostly white middle class.
