This is a nice playing Larry Ross “Professional Model” tenor, serial number 20135202. The tenor looks like it received a very healthy amount of use by the last owner. Going over the sax top to bottom, its body tube, bow and bow cap look to be in good shape. The lower part of the bell flare looks to have been repaired in the past but is in solid condition currently. This saxophone does include the original neck in similar cosmetic condition to the rest of the sax.

The “Professional Model” is not an instrument we are super familiar with. It shows a Mark VI concept to the overall look construction. The front F key is a key pearl touch similar to a Mark VI where the side keys and octave key mechanisms more resemble more recent Selmer Paris models. This sax does have a good “meaty” build about it, meaning it is not a super soft brass design that is often seen on moderately and lessor priced modern saxophones. The sax also has an extra large thumb rest in the right hand and does not have a high F#.

In a close and honest inspection of the horn it does not look like it has ever been seriously serviced since being purchased. All of the pads, metal resonators and key materials look like they are original. Some of the corks and felts are very worn out or missing at this time. Ultimately the saxophone is going to at least a good set-up before it can be considered ready for serious playing. The most discerning players (and techs) might also consider overhauling from top to bottom to their own specifications.

With all of that in mind it should be noted the horn is still playing up a storm through some leaks and very clickly keys. Even though we are not overly familiar with this saxophone we are blown away by how it plays. Super smooth response and a rich resonant quality. Key work feels fluid under the fingers and will be even better after receiving some professional TLC. Players who are familiar with playing Selmer and Yamaha horns will feel right at home on this sax.

At this time we have a number of great horns that could use some work. We would love to do this one up right but due to the busy schedule in our shop we selling a number of great items in as is condition. As such we are offering this tenor at a low price with room for the next owner to put some money into it.
