Vintage King Super 20 Alto Saxophone, Serial #298426 – Killer Player! 1948

This is a real ripper! Vintage King H.N. White Super 20 alto saxophone, serial number 298426. If you are looking for a big sound and a lot of cutting power you are going to fall in love with this Super 20. This alto was made shortly after King improved the design of the left-hand table keys as well as moving to a single strap ring. It is with all of the original key work including the rollers and pearl inlays for the palm, side and aux keys. 

 

This particular horn shows signs it has been actively played over the years. At this point, the majority of the sax is in raw brass. In close inspection, I do not see any signs the horn has ever received buffing. The engraving is very well-defined and crisp around the bell area.  

 

The body of the sax is physically in solid shape as it is now. It has seen some past body and solder repairs previously. The top foot of the low Eb key guard was re-soldered in the past as well as a repair to the high E key. Its bow cap has also been pushed in at some point. The physical integrity of the bow itself is still in good shape. The alto is with all of the original key work, pearl side and palm key inlays as well as the original rollers. A previous tech who worked on this sax installed a set of stainless springs. All of the springs are in good shape.

 

This saxophone is with a slightly earlier Super 20 neck from a slightly later horn, serial #298014. It is the proper vintage neck with an under-slung octave key and double socket receiver. The neck does not look like it has ever been seriously pulled down but the octave pip has been repaired at some point. 

 

It has been some time since this horn has received any serious service work. In order to make sure it is perfect for the next owner it is currently in our shop awaiting a mechanical overhaul. The Saxquest professional overhaul will include a dissemble and clearing before it receives precise key fitting and regulation. While the horn is apart it will be outfitted with a new set of premium leather pads, metal dome resonators as well as new corks and felts. Once complete the sax will be in perfect playing condition.
