Here we have a vintage King Cleveland Zephyr II alto saxophone in gold lacquer, serial number 356457. This alto was manufactured in 1957 during King's third series of the Super 20. (nickel table keys)
At the time this horn was manufactured, King had adapted the triangular nickel-silver Super 20 close-guard and brass key guards to all their models, including the second-to-pro line Zephyr. The key-work consists of full chromatic fingerings from low Bb up to palm-F, front-F rocker included.
This particular Zephyr has seen quite a lot of action over the years. It is currently going to need a pretty thorough restoration before it is ready for any serious playing. At this time it is still playing a bit through many leaks. This has the potential to be a tremendous player once again but does need to be overhauled first.
Once you get a hang of this horn's keys and intonation tendencies, it becomes very fun because of all the power in the upper register it possesses. The upper stack is explosive, the whole horn is sweet, spread, and a little bright, but not thin. Once overhauled, a horn like this would be burning.
Physically, this horn has seen a lot of use and the body shows it. There is lacquerware, dents, posts pushed in, the brace is pushed in, the whole body tube has sustained all sorts of damage, and there's evidence of past re-solders as well. The springs are holding up decently, no rust forming.
At this time we are offering a number of great vintage items in need of restoration at a low price. We will be shipping this Zephyr in as-is condition with its original neck with matching serial number, and a black leather exterior, hardwood box-case with a black plush interior. If you know a good tech for the overhaul you can get into this at a great price.
